Long before racing became big business, North Carolina's back roads and rough dirt tracks were already teaching drivers how to go fast.

In the 1930s and '40s, rural North Carolina was home to some seriously fast cars—and some seriously determined drivers. Moonshine runners modified ordinary cars for speed, handling, and durability, racing through the countryside while trying to stay ahead of the revenuers. Before long, those drivers began testing their skills against one another, and informal races evolved into organized competitions on dirt tracks across the state. Saturday nights brought wooden grandstands, roaring engines, clouds of red Carolina dirt, and crowds ready to cheer for their local heroes.

North Carolina's racing tradition grew from those humble beginnings into a sport that would capture the imagination of the entire country. When NASCAR held its first official race in 1949, it was on a dirt track in Charlotte—and North Carolina speedways hosted 30 of the organization's 52 races during its inaugural 1948 season.

And racing isn't just part of North Carolina's history. It's our official state sport. In 2011, stock car racing was officially designated the State Sport of North Carolina.
