In the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, music and moonshine became part of the fabric of Appalachian life.
Old-time songs and ballads were passed from generation to generation, eventually helping shape the distinctive sound we know today as bluegrass. The banjo, fiddle, guitar, and mandolin carried mountain stories from front porches and community gatherings to stages around the world.
Moonshine has its own place in that history. For generations, mountain families made corn whiskey as a way to supplement their income and make use of what they could grow. During Prohibition, hidden stills and the people who operated them became legendary parts of Appalachian folklore.
