First in Freedom — The Halifax Resolves 1776 Comfort Colors Tee

Before the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia, North Carolina had already taken a bold step toward freedom.

On April 12, 1776, delegates meeting in Halifax, North Carolina, adopted what became known as the Halifax Resolves. The resolution authorized North Carolina’s delegates to the Continental Congress to join with the other colonies in declaring independence from Great Britain—making North Carolina the first colony to officially authorize its delegates to vote for independence.

That proud moment is why April 12, 1776 still holds such an important place in North Carolina history—and why the date appears on our state flag today.
